Yazdegerd II

Yazdegerd II (417-457) was Shahanshah of the Sassanid Empire from 438 to 457, succeeding Bahram V and proceeding Hormizd III.

Biography[]

Yazdegerd was born in 417, the son of Bahram V. In 438, he became the new Shahanshah of the Sassanid Empire, and in 440 he waged a brief war with the Roman Empire before agreeing to stop building fortifications in Mesopotamia in exchange for payment. Yazdegerd spent most of his reign imposing Zoroastrianism on other peoples and fighting the White Huns, and he defeated Vardan Mamikonian's Christian uprising in Armenia at the Battle of Avarayr in 451. He died in 457.
