Vitellius (24 September 15-22 December 69) was the Emperor of the Roman Empire from 16 April to 22 December 69, succeeding Otho and preceding Vespasian.
Biography[]
Vitellius served as commander of the legions of the Roman Empire on the lower Rhine River in Germany, and in 69 AD he was one of the angered Romans that rose in rebellion against Emperor Otho. He defeated him twice at Bedriacum, and Otho committed suicide honorably to avoid a civil war from breaking out. Vitellius became emperor, but he was wildly unpopular, as he stationed soldiers in the Roman people's homes. Soon, the armies of the eastern provinces rose up under Vespasian, and Vitellius was struck down at the Gemonian Stairs after Vespasian entered Rome.
