The United Arab Emirates gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1971, under British rule since a treaty with the Second Saudi State in 1892. Since 1962 Abu Dhabi had traded oil, and when the UAE became independent, the oil market became their main source of income. The governing body was made up of the emirs of the seven emirates, federated into one country. Dubai became a tourist hub and a gateway to West Asia, and one of the most famous cities due to its accolade of having the tallest building on Earth: the Burj Khalifa.
