Flag of Kosovo

Kosovo is a landlocked country in the Balkans region of southern Europe. The nation declared its independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008, having achieved autonomy in 1999 after the Kosovo Liberation Army won the fight for freedom in the Kosovo War. Historically, Kosovo was divided between Muslim/Catholic Christian Albanians and Orthodox Christian Serbs, leading to ethnic conflict between the two groups as Yugoslavia broke up. After NATO intervened in the Kosovo War to assist the KLA, Kosovo became an autonomous region of Serbia under a United Nations administration, and it declared its full independence in 2008. By 2016, 110 countries recognized Kosovo's independence, but neither Serbia nor its allies of Russia and China refused to recognize Kosovo. In 2014, Kosovo had a population of 1,859,203 people, with 95.6% being Sunni Muslim, 3.69% Christian, and .71% others.
