Abdullah Mehsud

Abdullah Mehsud (1974-24 July 2007) was a Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan commander who was one of the members of the Mehsud clan. He was killed in the battle of Zhob on 24 July 2007, killing himself with a hand grenade.

Biography[]

Mehsud was born in the South Waziristan village of Nano in 1974, and as a young man volunteered to fight in the Soviet-Afghan War for the Mujahideen. Mehsud lost a leg to a landmine while fighting the Northern Alliance, and in December 2001 he surrendered to Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, who handed him over to the United States. He was given a prosthetic limb while in Guantanamo Bay, and was released soon after, but returned to the battlefield. He promised to never surrender, and fought against the Pakistani forces in the Waziristan War.

Death[]

On 24 July 2007, the Pakistani Army attacked the village of Zhob, a stronghold of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan militants where Mehsud had commanded a garrison. During the heavy fighting, Mehsud killed himself with a hand grenade.
